Bungendore Wood Works Gallery – Console Tables By David Mac Laren

Today we will present some console tables by David Mac Laren, Artistic Director and founder of Bungendore Wood Works Gallery. He represents the epitome of the term “journeyman”. He began that journey in 1973 in Manhattan in a gallery called ‘Impressions in Wood.

Mac Laren sees craft as a way of life that compliments the tourist ethos. His nationally and internationally renowned award-winning Gallery offers visitors genuine Australian art and craft experience that aspires to be the de facto national collection of woodcraft.

The story of David Mac Laren parallels the development of fine woodworking in Australia over the past thirty years. Where he and the gallery are today is where the standard and level of Australian woodworking is also.

If console tables have legs, then why not complete them with boots? The “Table with Boots” Wall Table by Gallery Artistic Director David Mac Laren provides a welcome break from the austerity of contemporary design with a sense of true whimsy and play.

With a sense of true whimsy and play, these modern console tables provide a welcome break from the austerity of design today.

Their hall tables all are the same except the tops change, with a variety of tops and sockets in various timbers. The legs all have threaded rod extending from the bottom. And we have a number of different shoes that we can twist on and off to create different looks.

The shoes are painted so it’s decorative and colorful. Here’s an entry point into the fun and the play within this exhibition.

David Mac Laren designed more console tables that always have a little detail that distinguishes his console tables from the others. As you can see, his Breakfast console table:

After a client commissioned a breakfast table on castors based on the design of our display tables he decided to make a smaller version.

This modern console table is made in ebonized Jarrah, with facets planed back to reveal the red of the Jarrah. This contemporary console table has options for a shelf that can be placed just under the top to allow for stools or lower down for utility storage.

This last one is called Chrisalis and is made of silver Ash, ebonized Jarrah and west African ebony. In order to not escape the rule, this one also has feet! Isn’t it incredible?

You can visit Bungendore Wood Works Gallery to see these beautiful console tables! Hope you liked it.
